A very fine early 19th Century (circa 1820) oil on canvas painting of stormy seas & shipping off Yarmouth, by famous marine painter George Vincent (Norwich school). This beautiful Georgian painting is in a Georgian maple frame with gilt gesso slip. The painting is in good condition with some minor craquelure, but no damage or losses and has been professionally cleaned at some stage in the last 20 years.
The gilt plaque bears the inscription 'G.Vincent - Storm off Yarmouth'. The picture is guaranteed to be authentic and comes framed. It is really beautiful and the frame and mount are quality and suit it perfectly.
A very slightly larger George Vincent oil painting sold at Bonhams, London in 2011 for £27,500, making my asking price very reasonable indeed.
Provenance
Private collection of Stephen Baring. Collection includes two inherited collections and twenty five years of personal collecting. The collection numbers well over 1,000 works of art and a number will be sold over the coming weeks to fund a project. The piece comes complete with a statement of authenticity.
Biography
George Vincent (27 June 1796 - c. 1831), English landscape and marine painter, was born at Norwich in June 1796. He studied art under "Old" Crome, and at the age of fifteen began to contribute to the Norwich Society of Artists. From 1814 until 1823 he exhibited occasionally at the Royal Academy, and also in the Water-Colour Exhibition and the British Institution, In 1819 he removed from Norwich to London, and he was a contributor to the Suffolk Street gallery from its foundation in 1824 until 1830. He possessed great artistic abilities; but he fell into dissipation, and his works became slight and hastily executed. Finally he dropped out of sight, and he is believed to have died about 1831. His most important work, a View of Greenwich Hospital, was shown in the International Exhibition of 1862. His London from the Surrey Side of Waterloo Bridge is also a fine work. Exhibited: Royal Academy 1814, 1823; British Institution 1815, 1831; Society of British Artists 1824, 1830; Norwich Exhibitions 1811, 1831.
