This is a very fine, very large scrimshaw whale tooth, in excellent condition. The tooth dates from the 18th Century and was decorated in 1805. The tooth is genuine antique scrimshaw of the stated era, not any kind of modern reproduction. Scrimshaw is a process of carving onto the tooth and filling in the carved lines with ink. This is a very fine piece of work and is signed 'The French frigate Hortense capturing HMS Acheron off the coast of Algiers 3rd Feb 1805'.
A rare natural history antique that will be much admired. Will also provide an excellent financial investment, as well as a possession to enjoy. Feel free to return for a refund if you are not entirely happy. You can view at our central London location - by appointment only. We offer online prices with offline availability and service.
